Tomato plants are growing

We grow tomatoes and cucumbers in our heated hoop house. This year we are growing two varieties of tomatoes: Super Beefsteak and Big Boy Hybrid.

Seedlings are under grow lights and are coming along nicely. They will go into the heated hoop house on April 15, and we can expect to begin harvest about two months later in mid-June.

I LOVE how you’re trying to sell your mom and dad’s orchard/ home, etc. I will definitely pass the word along…we are doing what you’re doing currentlybut on a much smaller scale. (we only have 80 semi dwarf trees) / no hoop building/ just starting to learn how to grow some of the other crops (blue berries, tomatoes, etc)
Here’s a link to my farm blog: good luck on selling the farm! It will make someone a great place to live. DM

If Iowa wasn’t so dog gone cold…

Didbyou fabricate the hoop house yourself?

    • Yes, I agree on the cold. Plus, the sweltering summers! Spring and fall, though, you can’t beat! Dad has worked in/with greenhouses since he was 10. He bought the parts for the hoop house used from a greenhouse/nursery nearby. He did not buy a kit. Now we grow in grow bags filled with ground coconut husk.
